Beautiful People: Clarkson & Elise

It's Beautiful People time (courtesy of Sky and Cait) once again and oh, is it a lovely one! Lovely. No, I didn't do that on purpose—but it really is, as it is all about romance and wonderful things like that. :) And being about romance, who else could I have but Clarkson and Elise?

First, though, for most of the story they never think of themselves as a “couple,” but much more as a brother and sister, though deep down their emotions are much different than that.

How long have they been a couple?
They meet at the beginning of the book, so what you see is what you get. :)

How did they first meet?
Ah, this is rather complicated to explain straight out, and besides it might be telling tales out of turn, so I just won't. :)

What were their first thoughts of each other? (Love at first sight or “you’re freakishly annoying”?)
When Clarkson first saw her, his thoughts were in total confusion and Elise was simply the only constant thing he had to hold onto. But for Elise...though she refuses to let herself meditate on it, it was complete and total love at first sight.

What do they do that most annoys each other?
Sometimes it troubles Clarkson that Elise refuses to give up on him.

Are their personalities opposite or similar?
I think they are fairly similar though it comes out differently (i.e. he is teasing and easygoing and she is more quiet and reserved). On the other side, though, she can get angry with people and he has a deeply buried vein of tragedy.

How would their lives be different without each other?

Clarkson would have died and Elise would have been comfortably rich and horribly lonely.

Are they ever embarrassed of each other?
Never. Elise never does anything that Clarkson has reason to be embarrassed about, and though some people (Uncle Eustace included) might say that Clarkson is an embarrassment in human form it only makes Elise more protective of him.

Does anyone disapprove of their relationship?
No one whose opinion truly matters to either of them.

Do they see their relationship as long-term/leading to marriage?
Elise realizes full well that their current friendship is someday going to totally change and though it is terrible for her to think about, she works toward the reason for change everyday. Her face is the first thing Clarkson remembers seeing and he doesn't even think of life any other way.

If they could plan the “perfect outing” together, where would they go?
They would have a picnic on the shore and walk along the edge of the sea tossing sticks into the water for Elise's dog to fetch. Sometimes talking, but mostly just being quiet together, and all very peaceful and friendly, and (if they thought of it) rather romantic. But that idea would never cross Clarkson's mind and Elise scorns herself for thinking such things. So it isn't really romantic...or it is without their knowing it.

  1. They sound like a darling couple. :-) In fact, I like this so much I think I'll use it with the main characters of my current story!

    1. Emma,
Thanks! And YES! You most certainly should! The questions are great fun to answer, and (I hope this doesn't sound rude or anything), but I have been VERY curious about your story and I would love to hear more about it! :)

  2. Clarkson and Elise (I typed Elsie by mistake, LOL) are an interesting pair. I've read stories where the girl is quieter and the boy is more confident, and often the girl is shoved the the side and she doesn't really matter as much. But what you said about Elise being Clarkson's lifeline really switched that up. But also, compared to the other posts I've read on this link-up, there seems to be less drama than other "couples", like they actually have a chance of growing old together, LOL. Great stuff!

    1. Ashana Lian,
Thanks for your comment! You are right about their relationship not having a great deal of drama between them. I was wondering a bit if that would make them interesting enough (I mean I think they're interesting, but I wasn't sure what the public might think. :)) Hence, I really appreciated your thoughts! Oh, and that is very funny what you said about growing old together, because though I like conflict in stories, some couples you just begin to wonder about... :)

  4. Awww! First of all, the picture had me hooked right when I saw it (what is it from, if I may ask?) and then I read about your characters and they sound SO sweet. Which book of yours are they in? I'd love to hear more about the story sometime, if you'd be all right with sharing! :)

    1. Natalie,
I'm super glad you found the picture interesting (it's always nice to hear that the picture is more or less perfect for the post!) and you certainly may - it is from the 40's Little Women and it is of Meg and Mr. Brooke. Janet Leigh (the actress in the picture) is very close to how I picture Elise, and though Elise's looks are slightly different than hers, she is still an important character in my inspiration process. :) Clarkson's personality on the other hand, is quite different from Mr. Brooke's, but his looks resemble him close enough, so that is that. :)

Oh, and Clarkson and Elise's story is "They Searched Who Laughed." There's a synopsis of it on my " My Stories" page, and I would most certainly love sharing more soon!

    2. Eowyn,
Oooh, yes! I've seen that version of Little Women (I actually own it but haven't watched it in a long time) but I didn't recognize them. :)

I went to your "Stories" page to read about it and it sounds lovely! Yes! Please do share more sometime, if you don't mind to! :)

  5. "Does anyone disapprove of their relationship?
No one whose opinion truly matters to either of them."

In my opinion (though it probably won't matter to either of them), that is the perfect answer.

    1. Penelope Grace,
Oh, I am so glad you liked it! (And I am sure that they would be pleased too, 'cause they are nice like that. :)) That answer popped into my head almost the instant I read the question, and I will confess that I was quite ridiculously pleased with it. :)

  6. I LOVE THEIR NAMES. Ahem. Sorry. I'm a name geek. xD But they sound so cute! And that 'perfect outing' just seems to fit them so well and I really, really love it.

    1. Aimee,
Names are terrificly exciting things, aren't they? Except that I must confess the credit of Clarkson's name goes to Kathryn Worth as this story is partly inspired by what might have happened to one of her characters, if the story was completely different (rather complicated I know)! Picturing them on their perfect outing makes me feel happy too. :) Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Tansie,
Thanks! :) On an average "my" couples tend to have a great many problems before they find they are perfect for each other, so I assure you, Clarkson and Elise are a very fun change of pace. :)
